Fifteen years ago the report "A Nation at Risk" by the National Commission on Excellence in Education, brought to the forefront the mediocrity of school achievement throughout our nation. Professional educators and researchers began the slow, but needed process of analyzing and rewriting a wide range of academic standards in all subject and curriculum areas. In California, the academic work identifying academic standards has resulted in the development of high level academic benchmarks and standards for all grade levels, in all subject areas.

Academic benchmarks and standards are designed to raise academic achievement by putting forth the learning and content expectations for all students. By establishing standards based education, California schools can compete and stay on par with those in the best educational systems in other states and nations.

This project will address the standards and benchmarks for fifth grade English-Language Arts, History-Social Science and Math. The activities have been designed to be interactive, student centered and have a constructivist approach to learning where students construct their own meaning, synthesizing and evaluating as they progress through the lessons.
