English/Language Arts Standards and Benchmarks

These standards and benchmarks represent the skills, knowledge and concepts that students should be able to master in Grade 5. Teachers are encouraged to design creative instructional strategies identified as best practices in classroom teaching which are aligned with these benchmarks and standards. Classroom teachers should design continuous assessment and monitoring systems to measure progress and are encouraged to share program goals and objectives across all curriculum areas.

 

English/Language Arts Standards and Benchmarks addressed in this project:

Standard 1

The student reads for meaning using appropriate skills and strategies.

Benchmark

1.5.1 Decodes unfamiliar words in grade level material using meaning and structure.

1.5.2 Reads grade-level material with fluency and comprehension
1.5.3 Rereads grade-level material for specific information

Standard 2

The student reads fiction and non-fiction for a variety of purposes.

Benchmark

2.5.1 Reads news magazines/publications and available multimedia sources to acquire information.

Standard 3

The student uses strategies of the writing process to write for a variety of purposes.

Benchmark
3.5.1 Develops organization in narrative writing.
3.5.2 Writes paragraphs using descriptive language.
3.5.3 Demonstrates competence in expository writing.

3.5.4 Uses the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.

Standard 4

The student writes with a command of the conventions of English, including grammar, mechanics and spelling.

Benchmark
4.5.1 Writes using correct grammar and mechanics.
4.5.2 Writes with few significant errors in the use of titles and possessive nouns.
4.5.3 Uses present, past, and future verb tense correctly.
4.5.4 Spells high-frequency words correctly in written work.

4.5.5 Writes using dialogue.

Standard 6

The student responds to literary works from a variety of eras and cultures.

Benchmark
6.5.1 Reads and listens to literature from a variety of genre.
6.5.2 Recognizes and identifies basic characteristics of literature from different genre.
6.5.3 Identifies and discusses story elements.
6.5.4 Draws conclusions, makes inferences, and predicts outcomes based on the text through writing and discussion.
6.5.5 Identifies literary techniques.

6.5.6 Explains how characters or events in a literary work are like people or events in one's own life.

Standard 7

The student gathers and uses information from a variety of sources for a specific purpose.

Benchmark
7.5.1 Locates, understands, and uses a variety of sources.
7.5.2 Records information using note-taking.
7.5.3 Organizes recorded information.
