Adaptation
and Extensions:
These strategies work when reading
in any curricular area. For instance, when you begin
a new science unit and complete a KWL chart, it is prudent
to point out to the children that what you write in
the K section of the chart are connections that you
make to the subject you are going to be studying. Oftentimes,
in a history/social studies lesson, a student will make
a connection to another historical time period or part
of the world. Take the time to point out the Text-to-World
connection that has been made.
These strategies can be employed by all students; those
with learning disabilities and the Gate children as
well. More capable readers often employ these reading
strategies naturally, but making them aware of the process
gives them the ability to consciously use these skills
for their own benefit.
