Transcripts.
I
transcribe the comments made in the seminars, using
either a laptop or my own version of shorthand. I then
word process the transcript, and distribute it to the
students. I have the students read the transcripts of
their own class's discussion, as well as the written
versions of the discussions of other class periods.
The students see that they are making insightful comments,
and that students in other classes are developing ideas
and arguments, sometimes along similar lines, and other
times in very different directions. I might assign students
to comment on one or more statements made in each of
the classes, or to attempt to prove or disprove claims
made by other students, using the texts we are studying.
Video:
Video
tape the discussion, then play back insightful comments
and exchanges, both for the class in which they took
place, and for the benefit of the other classes.
Audio
Tape: Record the audio of the seminar. This
would help with transcribing, and give students another
opportunity to hear themselves being insightful, or
perhaps illogical. It facilitates self-assessment.
