Socratic Seminar by Thomas Duffy

Subject Area: Mathematics

Grade Level: middle school

Overview: The students will gain profound understanding of the meaning of addition and subtraction of integers.

The lesson begins with a concrete model and scaffolding is gradually released until the concepts can be used abstractly.

Students start the lesson using tile spacers as manipulatives, tapping into the kinesthetic intelligence. The students advance to drawing models on whiteboards, permitting the teacher to check for understanding. Once the class progresses to paper, the students now have a tool to construct meaning when rules are forgotten.

Finally the students advance to abstract algorithms. The final assessment is to apply this acquired knowledge in solving a word problem.

Standards: 7th grade
Number Sense 1.2
Mathematical Reasoning 3.1 ,3.2
