Subject Area: Mathematics

Grade Level: Fifth Grade

Overview: Students use maps of different places to concretely explore fractions by measuring and calculating fractions of distances. Students are able to check their answers by referring back to their maps and measured distances. The mapping and measurement allows students to actually "see" the fractions they are using and develop further understanding of the value and meaning of the numerator and denominator of a fraction. This activity allows students to work at differing levels of fraction understanding, from concrete and visual to using the algorithms for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing fractions.

Standards: NS 1.1,2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4, MG 1.4, MR 1.2,2.1,2.5,2.6
