Cinco De Mayo - Mexico

Lesson Plan Level II

History/Social Science Standard #4 The student knows that there is cultural diversity

History/Social Science#3 - Student understands the relationship between past and present.

Objective:-

  • Students will understand the beliefs, customs, ceremonies traditions and social practices of the people that shaped history of the United States.
  • Students will understand people, and cultural groups are different and similar in clothing, food and festivals and, be able to verbalize the customs and traditions of Cinco De Mayo.

Background:

Cinco De Mayo is celebrated both in Mexico and the United States. Cinco De Mayo or the fifth of May celebrates the Mexican victory over the French in 1862. The battle of Puebla was fought by a much smaller Mexican army against a bigger and better equipped and well trained French army.

In Mexico the cities and towns celebrate the holiday with parades, mock battles, dances,music and fireworks. Flower festivals and floats are popular. Boys wear traditional Mexican clothes, girls wear red and green ruffled dresses with wide skirts.

At mid-afternoon the mock battle is held in the plaza. The sound of cannons and rifles and shouts are the highlights of the battle. At night there is a sword fight between the M Mexican and the French generals. The Mexican general wins and the fiesta ends with a big fireworks show.

Materials Needed:

  • Globe or world map
  • Internet access- to research Cinco De Mayo
  • Encyclopedia and books on Mexico
  • For this lesson Intellipics software and overlay were used. Intellipics software and overlay will need to be downloaded.

    Teaching Strategies

    1. Show the students on a globe or map where Mexico is located. Use an encyclopedia and books to research life in Mexico. What kind of food is eaten,what is a typical day like in the life of a Mexican child, what type of house do they live in, what is the climate like etc.
    2. Have students find information on Cinco De Mayo on the Internet. Bookmark a few kids educational sites ahead of class.
    3. Discuss Cinco De Mayo, festival, since it is celebrated in the USA students can verbalize what they know about it
    4. Give students an overview of the festival and why it is celebrated.
    5. Have students tell why Cinco De Mayo is one of the most important fiesta days in Mexico.
    6. Have students do the Intellipics activity

If using the Intellikeys alternative keyboard, the Intellipics activity should be open and active on the screen and the keyboard connected. Check to see that the activity works before beginning, If it does not, make sure the overlay has been sent by selecting the File menu and clicking on "Send Overlay". For best results start by using the mouse to move the cursor to the first picture item in the column (moon ) click to see the story. When students activate the activity, it will begin with the first picture in the sequence. If not using the adaptive keyboard, you may access this activity using the mouse, however, the cursor will need to be moved to each picture item individually in turn in order to read the story in order. After student reads the story have him or her do the accompanying worksheet to see if the student has comprehended the material.

Cooking Project

A popular dish are Enchiladas in Mexico.

Chicken Enchiladas Recipe

Ingredients

1 pound cooked and shredded chicken

2/3 cup sour cream

2/3 cup canned or bottled salsa

8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese

8 tortillas

1 teaspoon oil( for greasing baking dish)

Equipment

measuring cup

measuring spoons

large baking dish

How to make

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease baking dish with teaspoon of oil. Place an equal amount of chicken in the middle of each tortilla. Top with 1 teaspoon of sour cream. Fold up both side down in the baking dish. Cover with salsa and cheese. Bake for fifteen to twenty minutes. Top with rest of the sour cream before serving.

Makes eight enchiladas.
