The popular belief is that Betsy Ross a seamstress, had designed and sewn the first American flag. Today it is believed that Francis Hopkinson, a delegate to the Continental congress from New Jersey designed the flag. The US flag has thirteen stripes, alternating red and white, each stripe representing one of the 13 original colonies of England. The fifty stars are for each state as they joined the Union. President Taft established the proportions of the flag and the arrangements of the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each and a single point of each star pointing upwards.
