In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson, declared June 14 as National Flag day. In 1949 Congress and he President proclaimed that the flag be displayed on all government buildings and the people observe Flag day.

The popular belief is that Betsy Ross a seamstress, had designed and sewn the first American flag. Today it is believed that Francis Hopkinson, a delegate to the Continental congress from New Jersey designed the flag.

The US flag has thirteen stripes, alternating red and white, each stripe representing one of the 13 original colonies of England. The fifty stars are for each state as they joined the Union.
