Bastille Day -France

History/Social Science Standard #5 The student knows traditions and symbols that characterize the culture of the France.

History/Social Science Benchmark - Student will demonstrate an understanding of ideas and symbols of France that create a sense of community and continuity among citizens.

Objective:-Students will understand that the national holiday is a time when all citizens of France celebrate the birth of the Republic.

Background:

Bastille Day is celebrated on the14th of July in France, which marks the end of Monarchy and the beginning of the First Republic. Bastille was a fortress prison and a symbol of the oppression of the people in Paris. On the 14th of July in 1789 there were only seven prisoners left and it was stormed by a crowd of angry people. The people in France celebrated the storming of the Bastille as the beginning of the French Revolution. On July 14 1790, delegates from all parts of the country came to Paris to celebrate the Fete de la Federation and proclaimed their allegience to one nation and expressed their right to self determination. France was one of the first countries to become a model for liberty for other nations to follow.

In 1880 Bastille Day was proclaimed a national holiday.

The Revolution gave birth to the tricolor flag of blue, red, and white. Blue and red are the colors of paris and white is the color of royalty.

in France most people take Bastille Eve off and celebrate with festive balls, fireworks. On bastille Day there are parades, bands, dancing and good times.
