Australia Day

History/Social Science Benchmark - Student knows the basic elements of culture

Objective:-Students will recognize that countries have celebrations unique to their culture, beliefs and values.

Background

Australia Day is celebrated on January 26th and it celebrates the landing of the English in Australia. Captain Cook was the first person to discover Australia. In 1787 the first settlers arrived in Australia. The first inhabitants are known as the Aborigines however, they prefer to call themselves Koori. The Aborigines are one of the oldest civilizations in the world.

During Australia Day there are all kinds of celebrations. Some of the celebrations , all sorts of aquatic festivals take place such as regattas, tall ships race, , citizenship's are given, person of the year for seniors and youth are announced and picnics are popular.

Australia is located on the Southern Hemisphere and is known as the Land Down Under. I t is the smallest, flattest and driest continent. The summer in Australia starts in December and winter in January.

The capital of Australia is Canberra. The country has a population of 18.6 million people.

Australian flag is the only flag that flies over a whole continent. The colors gold and green are the national colors and are used during sporting events.

Central Australia produce 95% of the worlds opal. In 1993 the opal became the national gemstone. Aborigine legend has it that the rainbow fell to earth and created the colors of the opal.

Some of the natural wonders of Australia are "The Great Barrier Reef" which is the biggest coral reef in the world.

Monkey Mia is the only place in the world where wild dolphins come to the shore and people feed them fish.

Uluru is a another well known natural wonder. It is owned by the Anangu people and has Aborigine paintings and carvings. It is known as the remarkable pebble. The color of this place changes all through the day. Australia is home to many unique animals not found any where else in the world. Some of these animals are kangaroos, koalas, wallaby's, wombat, platypus, emu, kookaburra etc.

For this lesson Intellipics software and overlay were used. Intellipics software and overlay will need to be downloaded.

Teaching Strategies

  1. Show the students on a globe or map where Australia is located. Tell them about the natural wonders of the land.
  2. Have students search for kids sites on Australia
  3. Discuss how Australia has unique animals
  4. Talk about the seasons being opposite to the USA
  5. Have students do the Intellipics activity
  6. Have students verbalize about what is unique about Australia

If using the Intellikeys alternative keyboard, the Intellipics activity should be open and active on the screen and the keyboard connected. Check to see that the activity works before beginning, If it does not, make sure the overlay has been sent by selecting the File menu and clicking on "Send Overlay". For best results start by using the mouse to move the cursor to the first picture item in the column (moon ) click to see the story. When students activate the activity, it will begin with the first picture in the sequence. If not using the adaptive keyboard, you may access this activity using the mouse, however, the cursor will need to be moved to each picture item individually in turn in order to read the story in order. After student reads the story have him or her do the accompanying worksheet to see if the student has comprehended the material.
