Background; Mardi Gras or the Carnaval is the annual "Celebration of Life" festival in Brazil. Carnaval is also celebrated in many countries in South America as well as in New Orleans, San Francisco, London, Trinidad, Goa in India and Venice Italy. Tourists from all over the world come to Rio de Janeiro which has the most famous and biggest festival. The date varies from February to early March. It starts on a Saturday 40 days before Lent a Catholic holiday, and ends on a Wednesday (Wednesday of ashes.) Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday was celebrated in ancient Rome before starting the fast for Lent, people spent many days feasting, dressing up and merrymaking. The carnival season begins January 6th (12 days after Christmas) People put on masks and dressed themselves like spirits. Mardi Gras like many other religious festivals has become a secular holiday and a big party. Parades are held, a King , Queen and Prince are chosen. On Mardi Gras day everyone dresses up in costumes and masks. Some of the traditions of Mardi Gras is the custom of "throws'. Beads and trinkets are made which are given away at the parade. One of the unique throws is the doubloons. Doubloons are like coins and they have the date of the celebration on one side and the theme of the parade on the other side. Another custom is to bake "King Cakes". Now the tradition is to host another king cake party by the person who gets the baby inside the king cake. King cakes originally were a simple ring of dough with little decoration. Nowadays they are made with rich Danish dough covered with sugar in Mardi Gras colors. Materials:
Teaching Strategies
Art Project - Kathy Antoniotti For the art project start this on the first day, as the masks will need to be decorated.
1. Place a thin line of glue around each eye hole. Line the rhinestones on the glue, close to the edge of each hole. 2. Beginning at an outside edge of the mask, place a thick coating of glue, on a small portion of the mask surface. Layer the shaft end of the feathers on the glue, arranging them in an upward sweep. Take care not to cover the rhinestones. Continue until you reach the nose area. 3. move to the opposite side of the mask and continue to glue and layer feather's on the surface until the two sides meet at the center. 4. Cut a few bits of feather and glue to the center to cover any hard pointed ends. Let dry.
